Map Lifecycle, Versioning, and Field Updates¶

Why This Matters¶
Robots often outgrow the idea that a map is a single static file checked in once and forgotten. Doors move, shelves shift, docks are reinstalled, and new operational zones appear. Once that happens, the hard problem is not only making a new map. It is managing the lifecycle of map assets so updates are validated, versioned, rolled out safely, and reversible when field reality does not match expectations.

- Lifelong mapping only pays for itself when the environment actually changes enough to justify the operational complexity.
- For many teams, the right split is: mapping sessions produce candidate artifacts, production robots localize against approved artifacts, and updates roll out only after review.
- Keep semantic overlays such as keepout masks and dock databases versioned alongside the base map so navigation policy changes are traceable.
- Preserve rollback paths. A robot should be able to return to the last known-good map package quickly.
